A Pinoy sperm donor who happens to be a Catholic priest in The Netherlands caused a scandal after knowing that he is the biological father of 87 children.
Alipio Mendez from Catbalogan, Samar, went to the European country together with National Democratic Front (NDF) founder Jose Maria Sison on late 80’s.
Mendez reportedly sold sperm and even blood in order to survive earlier, but went on to study theology, and became priest on 1999.
The Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and representatives of different clinics met Wednesday with authorities of the Ministry of Health to demand a new system and establish national registry that communicates that information to the fertility centers to be able to monitor the donors.
“By not having a national registry that collects data from all sperm donors in the Netherlands, fertility clinics cannot check whether a man has donated to other centers or the times he has done,” lamented Efe Dr. Jesper Smeenk of the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (NVOG).
At that meeting, the Dutch health authorities were committed to studying the situation and exploring possibilities to avoid massive donations of sperm.
The privacy of the donor prevents fertility clinics from checking whether they have offered their semen to other clinics, whereby some men have taken advantage to donate in different centers and on several occasions.
According to Telegraph, under Dutch law sperm donors can father no more than 25 children. This is intended to minimize the risk of children later entering into a relationship with a half sibling.
Mendez reportedly sold and/or donated his sperm to 12 different clinics from 1989 to 1994.
Mendez caused a scandal when he demanded money from 13 of the children, who are all successful businessmen.
