Prominent political analyst and professor of Political Scienvce in De La Salle University, Antonio Contreras said that the recent killing of Albuera Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa while he was inside his prison cell.
Contreras said the legal system was supposed to dictate what would happen to Espinosa, he said that the man was already in jail.
“This is the way it should be. This what rule of law means.” he wrote Sunday on his Facebook page.
He said in this case, the rule of law was blindsided by people in contempt of it.
“So how do you then solve this problem and still operate under the ambit of the rule of law. Is there a room here to rehabilitate? Are we entering a phase similar to Mexico’s drug cartels operating with impunity?” he asked.
He also questioned what the move of the Commission on Human Rights is.
He said one cannot consider the killing as “extrajudicial” since it would be too “convenient” and that it forgets that the state could also be victims of the powerful who hold contempt for the law.
“Time to unpack your neat categories folks. It is no longer helpful. Recalibrate. Reframe. Get out of the comfort zone. ” he said.
“How can the state go after the rogue elements that appropriate and corrupt its authority if you automatically accuse it of complicity?” he added.
