Radyo INQUIRER journalist Ira Panganiban took to Facebook to laud the members of the so-called Philippine SocMed Rat Patrol, composed of bloggers and supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“You do the Filipino people proud,” Panganiban commended the Duterte defenders who were invited to a courtesy call with the president himself at the Malacanang Palace on February 9, Tuesday.
Panganiban looked back at the beginnings of these bloggers who shot to attention after Duterte announced his bid for the presidency. Their social media following then increased largely when the tough talking mayor of Davao won and assumed the presidency last year.
The bloggers rooted their unification to the mass attacks that they have reportedly been getting from allies of the opposition. Panganiban wrote, “They were accused of many things, fake news, fake accounts, irresponsibility and lack of accountability.”
Panganiban also said that their gathering together is their way of telling their critics, “Here we are, in person, ready to take on what you have to dish out.”
To end his post, Panganiban called on the attention of the “trolls.” He mentioned scathing descriptions such as “blogger sororities who think they are gods gift to journalism,” “broadcast people who twist words for their agenda,” and “newspaper personalities who believe only they can spurt truth.”
