With all the fuss now about the recent burial of Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, lawyer Trixie Cruz-Angeles says that one essential part of national healing is finding out what really happened when Ninoy Aquino was shot more than thirty years ago.
“I think an essential part of the national healing is asking the difficult question of why the primary victims of the dictatorship did not seek to prosecute those responsible for the the assassination of Benigno Aquino, Jr. This death sparked the outrage that led to the revolution of 1986, installing into positions of leadership, these same victims.” Angeles wrote on her Facebook page.
Aquino’s death was immediately pinned down on Ferdinand Marcos, without having found enough evidence.
As of the moment, the story remains: Aquino was assassinated by Marcos.
One testimony from Aquino’s guards who were convicted for his murder pointed out that the man behind the order was his own cousin, Danding Cojuanco.
Then until now, the Cojuanco family refused to even consider the idea, or put Danding on trial.
Soon, Marcos’ own men turned against him. Juan Ponce Enrile and Fidel V Ramos among others held significant vernment positions after the dictator was exiled. Some martial law crimes were even attributed to them.
“So why didn’t they? If not for themselves, then for the country that relied on this story of oppression and cruelty to launch a peaceful campaign to return democracy.” Angeles wrote.
She said the consequences of this failure are felt to this day.
“It will not go away.”
